Tree of the week – Vachellia xanthophloea – Fever tree – Koorsboom – Mooka-kwena

November 03, 20231 min read

Formerly known as Acacia xanthophloea, the Fever tree is one of our staple trees at Sun Trees. This beautiful tree is indigenous to South Africa and is common on river banks, flood plains, and swampy areas. It reaches a mature height of 15-25 m with a crown that is somewhat spreading, branching fairly up the trunk.

V. xanthophloea is one of the fastest-growing thorn-tree species in southern Africa, with a growth rate of 1-1.5 m/year. The trunk and branches of this tree are green in colour with a powdery layer that is bright yellow giving the tree its characteristic golden tint. From August to November, bright yellow globose flowers are borne, attracting bees and other insects with their scent. The blooms are followed by brown to yellowish-brown pods that split open to reveal small, hard seeds. This tree is also characterised by white, straight thorns which are not noticeable on more mature specimens.

This semi-deciduous tree can grow in areas that experience temporary flooding. It can also tolerate poor clay soils, windy and coastal areas as well as frost to an extent. If planted as an ornamental, trees should be planted in groups of up for the best effect. Vachellia xanthophloea has an invasive root system and should not be planted close to buildings or paved areas.
